Bashley 1 Brockenhurst 1 (Bashley win 3-2 on penalties)
Sydenham Wessex League Cup
This was, as to be expected, a hard-fought local derby, made feistier by some contentious decisions that heated rather than cooled the proceedings. Brockenhurst attacked from the start but Bash, although on the back foot, looked secure in defence until a penalty was given much to the surprise of both teams. Will Tickle was not going to miss this chance. The game now changed, and stoppages were the order of the day with fluent play restricted. Bash were now in the game, but the half belonged to the Badgers.
The tide turned in the second half with Bashley the more dominant side and despite good approach work they were finding the Brock defence a hard nut to crack; whilst the speed of the visitors, when breaking from defence, was a constant threat.
Bashley, now without their manager, whose protest was a protest to far, continued to pile on the pressure and a rocket shot from 30 yards from Dan Thomson hit the underside of the crossbar and, such was the speed, may or may not have crossed the line. When all seemed lost the game turned. In injury time, Nasim Meddah found Brad Morris breaking on the right and his floated cross into the crowded goal mouth was deposited high into the net by a combination of Sam Jackson’s head, shoulder and a Brock defender.
The match went almost immediately to penalties. After ten attempts, Bashley came out 3-2 winners. Scorers for Bash: Dan Munday, Sam Jackson and Nasim Meddah with Noel McCarthy-Gardiner and Ronan Moore netting for Brock.
Bashley: Burgess, Smith, Aimson, Morris, Thompson, Rolls, Jackson, Strickland, Munday, Drake, Beard.
