The fat lady forgot to sing

Bashley 2 Bournemouth 2 (Bournemouth win 5-4 on penalties) Hants Senior Cup A perfect evening, and a classic cup-tie, with both teams approaching the game as if was the semi-final of the FA Cup rather than the opening round of the Hants Senior Cup. Bashley, wishing to de-frag the memory of their disappointing FA Cup loss to the same opponents, were a different team and the first half was fast and furious with most of the play confined to midfield. Bashley’s lack of confidence in front of goal was matched by that of the Poppies, until seven minutes from halftime when Steve Flynn found himself alone in front of goal and duly headed past an exposed Kieran Burgess to give Bournemouth a halftime lead. Dan Munday The second half was one of pace, drive and excitement; Bashley made goal scoring their priority. Sam Jackson joined the high energy attack midfield of Harry Morgan and Harrison White in their efforts to feed the now buzzing Dan Munday (pictured) flanked by the creative Nasim Meddah and Jack Smith. Despite their efforts Bournemouth could easily have increased their lead and it took a fine penalty save from Burgess to keep the deficit to one. Then in a magic three minutes, the game was turned on its head. A defence dividing attack from White was completed by a cracking 20-yd drive from the in-rushing Harry Morgan and whilst the celebrations were still reverberating, Morgan became supplier allowing a jubilant Munday to almost break the net from mid-box. There were now 27 minutes remaining and it was the visitors turn to apply pressure, yet it was Bashley with their fast breakaways who looked the most likely to score. Then in the second minute of injury time a long clearance by Poppies keeper Sam Jones landed in no-man’s-land between defence and goalkeeper with Flynn the first to react and break Bashley hearts by slotting home. The whistle blew immediately afterwards. The crowd were then treated to an excellent display of penalty taking: eight un-saveable shots with the ninth also good but not un-saveable thanks to a fine dive by Jones. Bashley: Burgess, Smith, Aimson, Morris, Thompson, Rolls, Jackson, Morgan, Munday, White, Meddah. Used Subs. Beard, Drake.
