A Sliver Lining to end the Season
Bashley 4 United Services Portsmouth 1
Wyvern League Challenge Cup Final (held at Clayfields, Dibden)
Friday 11th May 2018
On the neutral turf of Clayfields, Bashley Reserves put the Services to the sword to win the Wyvern League Challenge Cup. This was Bashley’s third trophy of 17/18 and a fitting climax to an enjoyable season.
Bashley demonstrated their intent from the start with Harry Smith and Elliot Bevis prominent in their search for glory. Bevis went close when after some excellent approach play his shot went the wrong side of the bar although it was the US that came closest to scoring when their frontman, Dan Penfold, missed from close range. Bevis, put in procession after a fine assist from Sam Jackson, found his way to goal blocked; not to be outdone, he left his marker for dead and then hoodwinked keeper Joe Hunt into moving to his right before slipping the ball into the opposite corner of the net. This fine goal set the seal on the game.
Bashley were now actively mining for silver and, helped by a secure defence and a creative midfield, laid siege. Fifteen minutes into the second half, a well worked attack found an eager Smith in space and his celebratory goal-run started even before his cracking drive from twenty yards hit the back of the net! A rare attack by the Services was nullified by the quick reaction of Joe Coombes in using his feet to save. Bevis was in devasting form and his will-timed cross from the flank was met, full on the volley, by the impressive Manny Ohameje whose shot from the edge of the box reshaped the net. Cushioned by three goals Bashley relaxed and changes were made; then with 15 minutes to go US pulled a goal back. This gave encouragement and play was more even, however it was Bashley that always looked the most likely to score. Inevitably it was the dynamic duo who put the game to bed. Once again Bevis broke clear and cutting in from the left crossed the ball away from goal into the path of the onrushing Smith who met it on the full and this time he was on his shirtless victory run towards Bashley’s ecstatic supporters almost before his distant shot had crashed home.
