The Road to Wembley Starts at Bashley
Press Release – 2 Aug 2017
Saturday Bashley FC entertain Fareham Town in an FA Cup tie in the Extra Preliminary Round that marks the start of the Emirates FA Cup for season 2017-18.
All either team needs to do is win their next six FA Cup ties and they face league opposition, two more wins and it’s Premiership and Championship sides in the draw. A mere six more victories and they’ve won the FA Cup! It’s part of the magic of the FA Cup that part-time sides could win it even though in reality it’s just a dream.
Good runs in the early stages of the cup are very exciting. The winners earn prize money that can be a lifeline for lower league clubs. The financial incentives and “glory” combine to make such FA Cup encounters competitive and rousing games.
Last season Alan Vivian from Eastleigh started watching FA Cup games in the early rounds, including Bashley’s defeat by Sholing. He managed to attend matches in every round all the way up to and including the final at Wembley. This year Alan is hoping to repeat that feat and raise money for charity starting at Bashley Road this Saturday. At the tie he will be making a collection for Piam Brown Ward at Southampton General Hospital, where his son was treated for cancer.
KO is at 3pm on Saturday 5th August
