Bashley Lose both Points and Manners

Bashley 1 Solent University 2
Wessex Premier

Any thoughts of easy pickings were soon discounted when bottom club Solent University started strongly and dominated the first ten minutes. Bashley’s best chance fell to Jamie Webber when he sliced wide following a Conor Whiteley attempt that came back off the crossbar whilst at the other end a high bouncing ball almost surprised the Bash defence as it landed just past the post.

Bash pressed forward and Harry Bunce, after leaving his defender cold, was denied a successful finish by the alertness of Solent keeper Alex Londors. Then a turning point, a poor clearance gave the Student’s Tam Demunga a free pass to goal which was joyfully accepted.

Bashley strove forward in search of an equaliser: Harry McGrath found the wrong side of the bar after excellent approach work by Lewis Ross; a fiercely struck drive from Jack Smith from 35 yards surprised everyone apart from the keeper who’s acrobatic save seemed impossible! Moments later an effort from Will Prior suffered the same fate as Londors once more excelled.

The second half started with the home side looking confident and far from worried. This all changed when a run by Alex Jean- Pierre, Solent’s big frontman, left Bash keeper Jason Collins in two-minds and his lob over the advancing keepers head answered that problem.

With thirty-five minutes still to play the game was still there to be won but unexpectedly the home side lost composure. Whiteley went into the record books as the first Bashley player to experience the Sin Bin and Bunce was lucky to not to join him.

This result was a loss of focus and uneven play. Jack Smith who had been the subject of a nasty tackle moments before was given a red card for an elbow which could have been accidental, but this was seen differently by the officials who were both close by.

With four minutes left to play Bashley pulled one back the result of a penalty when McGrath was brought down in the area. Ross gave no chance from the spot. Brad Strickland was on for Whiteley and Ollie Smith for Will Prior, but the late equaliser never came just another a yellow card.
