Bashley 2 Portland United 6
Sydenhams Wessex Premier
Bashley, still licking their wounds from Saturday’s heavy loss at Alresford were lively starters and went ahead after 10 mins thanks to swinging Sam Jackson free-kick from outside of the box. A short-lived advantage as Portland were level six minutes later when following a free kick Ryan McKechnie bundled the ball home.
Portland, boasting a team of some size and power, now took charge and after a fast exchange of passes took the lead when Ross Doidge finished the move with a sharp shot. Bashley came back and equalised almost immediately when a cross from Jackson was forced over the line by Cameron Beard.
The game was fast and exciting, but it was a give-away by the Bash defence that let in McKechnie to score unopposed and give the visitors a lead they never looked like forfeiting.
Nathan Clements replaced a limping Beard at halftime and later Tyler Rutten and Rian Drake came off the bench. But changes in player and position did little to stop the now rampant Blues. Isaac Haigh, in as a replacement for the injured Jason Collins, pulled off several electrifying reaction-saves but the youngster had no answer to the height and bulk of the Portland attack.
Bashley had their chances and may well have changed the course of the game if Brad Strickland’s shot had not cannoned back off the bar and had Rutten reached a rebound off the chest of the keeper from another Strickland piledriver.
All in vain. Portland added three more: two from headers and one over the top of the keeper underlining their height advantage over an ailing Bashley defence.
